They're tough. They're masculine. They're high-performance. Those words often come to mind when one speaks of the classic muscle car. These vehicles are considered some of the finest examples of the time when American automobile production had reached its zenith. The classic muscle car, with its trim design and unusual suitability for drag racing, has attained a fame that has earned it a place as one of the signature vehicle design movements of modern automobile history.The classic muscle car design is one that does not emphasize power over appearance. For the most part, the makes and models were retired, though some were reinvented as luxury cars instead. Sound Deadening: A Great Investment for Great Sound!
OK, here's the deal: If you want to build a quality stereo system, SOUND DEADENING IS NOT OPTIONAL; IT IS MANDATORY.Why is that?Let me ask you a question: Do you want to hear music, or road noise? Do you want your license plate to be quiet, or rattle when the bass hits? Do you want to hear your tires, or do you want to hear MUSIC?I know I want to hear the music, and as such, I never do a real car stereo installation without using sound deadening material.So, with all of that said, let's take a closer look at sound deadening.Sound deadening comes in many forms, but the two main types are spray on, and matting.Spray on deadening comes in either an aerosol spray paint can or in a large bucket. The aerosol can is great for small jobs, but if you plan to go crazy with the deadening, you'll want to buy it in bulk. When you buy it in bulk, you'll also need a nozzle of some sort. Usually this can be purchased with the large bucket of sound deadening. This type of sound deadening material works best for tight areas, and where you want a medium amount of sound deadening.The other kind of sound deadening comes in sheets and is applied with an adhesive on the back of the sheet. This deadening is more difficult to work with, but much more effective than the spray-on type. It is usually used on larger areas, or where more deadening is needed.Because sound deadening can get expensive, the smart installer installs it where it is most effective. To figure this out, take a drive in your car with the radio off. Listen to where the most noise comes into the vehicle. The main places I look to deaden are around the wheel wells, the firewall (of course), the doors, the roof of the trunk, under the rear seats, and under the center console.SO! Check out those places, check out any other place where noise comes through, and start figuring out how much material you'll need.This rule should go without saying, but get more material than you think you'll need. The reason for this is because once you have the material installed, you'll want to do a second listening, only this time with the music turned on. You will most definitely find rattles that weren't noticed before. You will probably also find some places where you'll want to bulk up on sound deadening.When reproducing music, noise and distortion are your biggest enemies. Sound deadening will go a long way towards fixing these problems.In addition to silencing road noise, sound deadening works great for reducing rattles in your vehicle. For example: Say you just mounted some high powered speakers in your doors. Because vehicle manufacturers never intend for high powered speakers in the doors, they aren't designed to handle the vibrations.To fix the vibrations (which sound HORRIBLE), just cut out a ring of sound deadening material, and apply it to the spot where you mount the speaker. Mount the speaker to the top of the sound deadening material, and be sure the speaker is bolted down tightly. Now, try turning up the stereo again. Did this fix the problem? If not, try applying another layer of sound damping material.Another trick: Have you ever noticed that certain panels in your vehicle vibrate when certain bass frequencies play? Get some of the spray-on sound deadening material, and apply it to the back of the panel to dramatically decrease the vibrations. For larger panels, use sound deadening sheets.Another trick: Does your license plate rattle when the bass hits? Don't look like an idiot, fix it! Take some sound deadening material, and apply it to the back of the license plate and the license plate frame. Try the bass again, only this time you won't embarass yourself when you drive through a parking lot!Good luck and good sound!

Brake failure was a major factor in a recent spate of bus accidents, Transport Minister Jeff Radebe said on Thursday. "Buses involved in these accidents are clearly old and not roadworthy," he told a SA Bus Operators Association (Saboa) conference in Pretoria. In some instances, buses were fitted with new parts to pass roadworthy tests, after which they were removed. Operators whose buses crashed because of negligence, recklessness and unroadworthiness would be held responsible, he warned. Radebe said all bus operators receiving state subsidies will have to renew their fleets and undergo regular testing at authorised facilities…

Your brake system may be crying for help if you're hearing strange noises when you depress the brake. Two of the most common are squeaks and grinding.
Squeaks
Friction from the brake lining causes heat. Under extreme conditions this can damage the pads and/or lining, brake drums and rotors.
Grinding
Metallic grinding sounds indicate your brake pads are worn through. Metal-to-metal contact will damage drums or rotors.

Brake testing and the importance of brake pad certification – ECE R 90 and VC8053
ECE R90 is a European standard for brake components that requires brake manufacturers to conform and guarantee to the original equipment standards as far as performance and quality is concerned. Products complying to these standard carry an "E" mark on products and packaging. In Europe brake pads cannot be used or sold unless they carry this mark proving that they performance and quality standards compliant.
Most countries around the world are following suit by setting standards to which brake pads have to comply.
Regulation VC8053 is minimum specification published in the Government gazette No. 22014 of 2 February 2001, to which brake lining assemblies in South Africa has to comply and this specification is regulated by the SABS.
The tests for both these regulations consist of laboratory and road tests – we will not go into detail about it but rather summarize the requirements:
Brake pad road tests:
A series of 0-type standardisation tests – braking suddenly under different conditions of vehicle speed and load with the aim to test the correct response in emergencies, parking and different braking situations.
Loss of efficiency when warmed up – In the first test the brake is used 15 times in succession to test its performance under different conditions. In the process, the brake warms up. In the last instance its performance is measured and checked for correct operation after which the results are compared to brake performance when the brakes are cold.
Speed-sensitivity test – The pressure is identified in the previous test to obtain a deceleration of 5m/s2. The same kind of test is repeated at 65 km/h, 90km/h and 135km/h in order to check that the brake's deceleration is maintained irrespective of the speed at which the vehicle is traveling.
Brake pad laboratory tests:
Once the road tests are completed, mechanical laboratory tests are done:
Compressibility test – the compressibility of the brake pad should not exceed 5% of its thickness at 400 deg. C.
Resistance to brake seizure – this test simply determines the adherence of the friction material to the metal support.
Once the tests are completed an approval number is issued and it is compulsory that the brake pads and packaging contain the specific number – example: E1 XXXXX. Packaging should be tamper proof and contain instructions in the local language where the product will be sold.
Standards compliant brake pads will not only ensure roadworthy vehicles but also ensure safety for both the driver and their passengers when it is needed most. The Hurricane broadly successfully and dramatically illustrates Daimler-Chrysler's ingenuity, technical ability and wherewithal. The Hurricane set-up uses the Chrysler Group's Multi-Displacement System which allows it to run on 4, 8, 12 or all 16 cylinders enabling it to adjust for speed, power and torque giving the driver ultimate power train control. The Hurricane is responsive and can go from 0 to 60 in less than five seconds!The power is transferred through a central transfer case with split axles and has a mechanically controlled four-wheel torque distribution system. One of the most impressive features of the Hurricane is its zero turning radius, which enables the vehicle to turn virtually in a circle in place! This is all thanks to a skid steer capability and toe steer, which is the ability to turn both front and rear tires inward. The Jeep concept vehicle has two types of 4-wheel steering: the traditional method with the rear tires turning opposite of the front wheels and an innovative one in which all four wheels turn in the same direction. This actually allows the Jeep Hurricane to move sideways without changing where it is pointing.Topping off all of this is the Hurricane's fantastic ground clearance of 14.3 inches and impressive approach-departure angles of 64.0 and 86.7 degrees. How To Save Big Money On Repairs And Auto Parts
We all know it is cheaper to fix things yourself. It is the same with a car or truck. The biggest expense with any repair is not the parts, but the labor. It is not uncommon for repair and service shops to be charging $60 to $70 per hour of labor. And they round to the next half hour or hour for any repair. Just go to any new car dealer and ask to have your windshield wiper blades replaced. They will charge you 10 times the price of replacements at your local auto parts store. So anything you can do yourself to save will be a big help. The purpose of this article is to show you some things you can do on your own and how to get the lowest prices on parts so you can save big and put your money towards something better than fattening your local auto dealers pockets.First off is routine maintenance. Routine maintenance consists of items like oil changes, tire rotations, and similar. Oil changes are a must at every 4000 to 5000 miles for most every car. Do not go by what your dealer says. They want to rev up your maintenance plan and have you doing more than is required. Instead, use your owners manual. If your car didn't come with one, than buy one off of Ebay. The owners manual will give you exact recommendations for every service and when and what should be done. For oil changes use Walmart. They charge around $15 for a oil and filter change and will lube your chassis at the same time. They will also check your tires and change your air filter if you desire or need it. They have the best service for the lowest price and at $15 its better to have them do it than do it yourself. Expect to pay twice this at a new car dealer.It is also a good idea to check your tire pressure at every gas fill up. A tire pressure gauge can be purchased at Walmart or any auto parts store for a few dollars. Proper tire pressure will prolong the usefulness of your tires and help ensure better fuel economy. To most people a under inflated tire is pretty obvious, but a over inflated tire can be just as dangerous as it can lead to blowouts and loss of traction especially in wet conditions (hydroplaning). Also, check your tires for nails, punctures, slashes, anything that could be wrong with it. If you need new tires, be sure to shop around and avoid the new car dealer as they will have a huge markup on them. For instance, 1 ZR Goodyear tire for a 2002 Ford Mustang GT was $289. The same ZR tire with a different make (Kumho) was $100 installed and balanced (the $289 at the dealer did not include installation or balancing. Shop around and look at discount stores. Also look at Costco, Sams club and BJ's for tires. If you have an older car and don't care about matching the exact style you can always go to your local junk yard and buy an entire set for dirt cheap. You would be amavzed at what you might find there. A friend of mine picked up 4 tires for a 1999 corvette for $150 and the tires only had maybe 10,000 miles on them if that.Lights and lighting on your car are an item that is routinely overlooked. If your lights are dim you could have a battery charge, alternator or dim, cloudy lenses. These are all easy to fix. A battery should be checked for its ability to hold charge at least once a year (more in extremely cold climates). An alternator can be replaced very easily, or if you don't feel comfortable a local mechanic can do it. Do not do this at a new car dealer as they will charge at least 300% more. A good tip is to go and buy the part at your local auto parts store and then inquire with the counter clerk as to a mechanic that they recommend to install it. You will save a lot and it will be professionally done. They will probably even come to your house to do it. As to your headlights, turn on your lights. If they are dim, is it the bulb or cloudy lenses? If it is the bulb, the cheapest replacements can be found at Walmart or on Ebay. It is recommended you go with brighter Xeon bulbs as they are only a few dollars more and increase brightness and night visibility by over 20 percent. If it is cloudy headlights there is a new headlight repair and restoration kit that will restore the lenses to new. This will save you big over replacement as the average plastic automotive lens costs $250 to replace.Checking your fluid levels routinely is a good idea. A lot of cars now will do this for you and will even alert you to when it is time to perform a certain service. It takes 2 minutes to unscrew the oil cap and pull out the dipstick. On older cars you should also look under the cap. Is the oil really dirty, sludge like, or have white in it? These all indicate something needs to be done. The first two mean it is in dire need of an oil change. The latter with the whiteness or light chocolate look means you have a blown head gasket and coolant is leaking into the engine. That is really bad and requires major repairs and can be the result of running a car too hot. Fill all fluids to the fuel full line or indicator. By routinely checking your cars fluid levels you will be ahead of the game and keep your car running better and for much longer.Another great idea to keep service costs to a minimum and save you big at the same time is to buy 1 to 3 year old used cars with around 30,000 miles on them. And as the largest and most powerful Blazer available, the new EXT
has plenty to offer.It's comfortable and provides a confident drive. It offers vast cargo
space, has an attractive two-tone interior, a well-designed console
and boasts of plenty of impressive option packages.But sometimes subtle qualities or subtle deficiencies are more
impressive or problematic than a vehicle's overt characteristics.So it is with the new Blazer. While recently showing the car to several
friends, one sat in the second row of seats. Surprisingly, his head
easily hit the roof. My friend is 6-foot-3, and while that's tall, he's not a
giant by any stretch."I've got a Scion and there's plenty of rear seat headroom," my friend

circumstances, soft in other scenarios with far-too-long response time.
The Blazer maneuvers well in traffic and its turning radius is
surprisingly tight and efficient. But again, for each vehicle strength
there's a weakness. The Blazer's fuel rating of 14 mpg (city)
and 19 (hwy) is hardly impressive.Standard features are adequate: power mirrors, heated daytime
running lamps, remote keyless entry, tinted rear glass, 65/35 second

Installing the correct exhaust size is going to give you the correct temperature of exhaust and will evacuate the air effectively. Contrary to what many think, a car doesn't actually lose horse power because it has a large exhaust because of a loss of back pressure. It looses horsepower with a large exhaust because of turbulence and the cold dense air.#2

Birds flap wings, sharks move vehicle fins. Each of these organisms is naturally equipped for forward propulsion using the most efficient system possible against the medium through which it moves. In studying such a perfect model of motion, it's worth pondering whether human engineers can't put these same mechanical concepts to use in the construction of their aircraft machines. One idea worth testing is the incorporation of materials with memory into future design plans.Memory Materials and Wing or Propeller Construction:Memory comes into play when one considers the repetitive pattern of wing-flapping or fin propulsion. A moving mechanical object can easily mimic this same movement, provided the materials it's manufactured from are light enough and flexible enough. The fin or wing of said movement machine must ideally be designed, as is the muscular-skeletal makeup of a bird's wing, to return to normal position when bent. Relative water flows, created current from AUV, or increased back pressure from forward momentum against the artificial fin or wing, would force it back to its position. The forward propulsion of a propeller would cause it to bend out of shape and then it would once again correct itself. Clearly, in order for this to work, the lightness of the machine, the force by which it propels itself, and the density of the wing structure must all be taken into account. The "flying or swimming machine" will inevitably undergo many experiments before optimum physics and ultimate success is achieved.Memory Materials, Self-Propelling Air/Water Crafts and Energy-Efficiency:In our hypothetical memory-material model, the propulsion apparatus would wiggle and move forward and thus be less detectable... with less mechanism or springs and therefore less controlling surfaces, less murphyism, less wear and tear and less energy to propel. The propeller or propulsion system moves the vehicle forward. The horizontal stabilizer, whether a canard or conventional tail, could force the aircraft down or up. The dihedral could have a somewhat memory of the way the grain in material is manufactured, causing it to flap like a bird with a muscle above the wing. The force of the relative wind would cause the wing to bend downward until it sprung back, and thus you have an unpredictable flight pattern. You could have several vehicles flying in a swarm of flock, which were manufactured slightly less or more so they would be nearly impossible to hit. Yes, with the same propulsion output they could fly at similar if not exact speeds since the ups and downs would equal out. The flapping of the wings would reduce the amount of energy needed for sustained flight.Memory Materials in UAVs:Memory materials might also be used to build a motor in a UAV that would allow water to flow through, such as a diaphragm membrane, which might drive single piston. "Ferromagnetic" memory materials can be shaped for this type of use; for example, manganese or gallium. One might fit small units into capsules that are inserted into a tube and placed inside of a Navy Seal or fighter pilot suit. If one discovered a way to set these capsules to vibrate, the sound would give away their position for extraction or rescue.Remember the movie Core when they found the craft, which was at the bottom of the ocean near a vent which caused the whales to find it? Polymers have also been used in cars and automobiles like the Saturn where you punch the door and it pops back out. Meaning, the wing would ideally be constructed of a poly plastic that can be converted into engine power at the melting point. In essence, the wings dissolve upon arrival at destination... a problem, yes... but on a single no return mission of a UAV this would be quite acceptable. In the beginning of the flight, the structural integrity to fly in part would be the amount of strength to carry the fuel too. Here, the fuel and the wing are synonymous. The concept of the vehicle "eating itself alive" as it were, is similar to the marathons or ultra marathons I use to run when near the end of the race you were depleted and literally running on guts, body fat and sheer will power.As the aircraft eats the inside of the wing which is made of a poly type plastic, it is dissolved, thus the aircraft converts this into energy and the weight is decreased meaning it flies even more efficiently. The last leg of the mission is down hill, and it flaps its way in a slow glide to the target or mission end point. The goal line to win a victory point in the overall battle; thus, scoring points against the opponent.The reason we use the wing is that it can be hollow and it is at the C.G. point. If we take some from the tail then eventually a motor in the rear would deplete itself; however, the weight and balance would be out of check, unless a downward angle of attack and proper speed was continuous. One variation on this theme is to have the engine itself burn up like a Roman candle in the end, providing forward momentum and thrust. Since the chief purpose would be for multiple UAVs on a single mission, this might happen at different times and actually space out the mission and attack sequence. Meaning, the enemy would be under constant fire until the last UAV made its final death blow. This is of value when using UAVs as a diversionary force to keep the enemy occupied.The wing spars could be made of the same types of plastics that surgeons use to expand heart arteries during operations. We know these techniques work on metal, plastic, carbon fibers, resilient composite, rubber of all types even (stretch Armstrong). We pick the lightest material and go for it. Nickel-titanium stints are also easily adaptable metal, and you would not need much. If you use nickel and poly fibers you could made a battery or find a suitable chemical reaction for fuel or propulsion or even poison gas on impact (forget I said that).The engine in the rear might be made out of a clay type substance encased in cellophane which, once lit from the rear, would provide the thrust like a small C-65 Estes rocket engine. Once the engine was burned out, it could fall to Earth in cinders with a whistle on it so it made an intimidating sound and another diversion; a dud, or perhaps a small charge.Other Uses for Memory Materials:Tesla would enjoy this discussion immensely; he would laugh and come up with 50 other good uses... probably concepts a lot more noble since he was a proponent of strong defense as opposed to strong offense like Von Clauswitz. Nevertheless, the uses for UAVs are of supreme value and maybe in thinner mediums of fluid such as salt water, where the polymers might serve a more useful purpose without succumbing to corrosion over long journeys or long life missions. We also saw a recently that the steely import tax raised the price of an SUV $800, prompting automakers to use even more plastics and more composites to save money and weight, not so good for the steel manufacturing which it one time was the backbone of this economy, but certainly good news for lightweight materials and fuel consumption. Sometimes you look a part and say well that would be hard to fix, is my technician qualified, will it come out right, is it worth the risk to try, or should I just order another part and put this individual on other car. One thing I found out in the seminars, is to never played the guessing game, instead follow the directions exactly.The most important thing in plastic repair is to thoroughly clean the surface and remove the petroleum substances on the surface of the part. The best way to do this is to remove the mold release agent is to use simple hot water and soap. Then you use the chemical cleaner that came with the kit and immediately begin your repair. The longer the part sets, the more chance that the mold release is still left in the plastic and that will rise to the surface and deteriorate the adhesion.
