Staying Cool When the Job Heats Up
Jobs are heating up. We're all feeling the pinch
of hiring freezes and information overload.
Workplace stress is increasing right along with
the workload.Headaches are turning into migraines; back pains
are driving us to the chiropractor, and minor
irritations are causing tempers to flair. In addition to our personal reaction to stress, it
is taking its toll on the bottom line. Stress is
driving up the cost of health care, and we can see
a huge impact in things like tardiness,
absenteeism, personnel turnover, and accidents.
The annual price tag of stress in corporate
America is more than $150 billion. While forecasters tell us we can expect more of
the same, we need our jobs, and we need to find
ways to control the stressors that are
affecting our health and productivity. Here are 11 ways you can keep your cool and
minimize the impact of stress on your life.Do your own job - When poor the work habits of
others create stress, remember why you're there.
Pay attention to your own job. You will not be
rated on the performance of others, but the boss
will note the quality of your work. Stay focused
on the job you were hired for, and let management
deal with improving the department or the company.
Don't get stressed about things that are not your
responsibility.Organization - Regardless of company expectations,
you can alleviate a lot of your stress by
organizing your work space and getting a firm
grasp on the work that must be done. Even if you
have to pay for it yourself, get the tools needed
to organize your effort, e.g. files, furniture,
PDAs, software, and training. Work with your boss
to prioritize projects and routine tasks. Only
get concerned about unfinished work if the boss
gives it a priority. You'll never get everything
done, so pick the most important and file
everything else in an easy to reach file drawer.Communication - It's important to maintain your
supervisor's comfort level, so meet with them as
often as necessary to keep them informed of
projects and progress. Give them updates the way
they want them (email, memos, briefings, etc.),
and persist in getting the feedback that is so
important in reducing stress. Use this same
strategy with those who give you information or
products to do your job and those who depend on
what you give them. Good communication is
essential for good stress control.Interruptions - Avoid stressful interruptions by
controlling your schedule and your communications.
Establish times for meeting with those who want
information from you and hold them to it. The
more persistent you are, the more organized they
will be. Handle phone calls and respond to email
during specific times. Develop a list of people
and events that disrupt your job and work with
each until it is under control.Family Time - Family situations are among the
greatest stressors at work. There's an old axiom
that says, "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody
happy." It's true. Avoid future problems by
prioritizing family time on your schedule and
stick to it. Get professional help if you're
unable to resolve sticky situations.Exercise - More than 80% of all doctor's visits
are stress related. Those who find time to
exercise reduce stress, strengthen their immune
system, and improve their well being. Do a little
research and talk with the experts to find out
what fits your needs. Make the exercise part of
your work schedule if possible; don't let it cut
into family time. Regular exercise can add years
to your own life and make you more productive for
your employer.Nutrition - Proper nutrition is a key to stress
control. The US Army recognizes proper nutrition
as a critical element in controlling stress among
combat soldiers, and you must admit, your job is
sometimes as stressful as combat. Use the
Internet or get information from Human Resources
to improve nutrition. You'll have to make some
deliberate changes because our eating habits are
affected by our culture, the expectations of
others, inadequate knowledge about what makes a
proper diet. Learn what is needed and make a
plan.Rest - Take charge of your sleep habits in the
same way you work on your eating habits. Sleep
deprivation is a major stressor by itself, and it
adds to the problem with other stressful events.
Cut out the late night television. Quit taking
work home from the office. Change the pattern of
your weekend parties. Get some new friends. Do
whatever is necessary to get back on track with
seven or eight hours sleep every night. Studies
show that twenty minute power naps make us more
productive, so use part of your lunch break for
nutrition and part for a short nap to control
stress. You'll get more done.Discussion - Tell people what's on your mind. If
you can't ignore someone's special talent for
bugging you, talk it over with them. There's a
good chance they are unaware of the offense, so
you don't need to get up tight about it. In a
friendly tone of voice, let them know what gets
under your skin and be ready to make some
concessions yourself. As you now know, their
irritating habit is probably magnified by other
stressors, so make sure you've done what you can
to control stress before challenging anyone.Education - The more educated you are about your
job, the less stressful it becomes. Even if
you've been on the job for years, there's always
more to learn about the upstream and downstream
impact of what you do. Stay up to date with trade
journals, books, and other research. Become the
expert at what you do and coach others. While
some companies do not pay for this type education,
your own investment will make you more valuable to
your company. What you know is portable - and it
looks good on a resume.Volunteer - Helping others has an immediate impact
on stress levels. Build in some family time by
volunteering as a family once a month. Build
rapport with supervisors and co-workers by
organizing a once-a-week lunchtime volunteer
program. Lead a food or clothing collection for
needy employees or families outside your company.
Create a support-the-troops letter writing
campaign so everyone in the company communicates
regularly with GI's away from home. In short,
doing something for someone else takes your mind
off the stressors that bother you most. Each of these stress relievers works independently
of the others. Find one that's practical for you
and put it to work. Friends, family, and
co-workers will all notice the changes in you and
thank you for making the effort. For a free article about the top ten workplace

The Seven Deadly Roadblocks to Success
When traveling down the road it is always good to beware of roadblocks! You don't want to crash and burn do you? The same is true in our journey toward success. We need to beware of those things that will keep us from our destination! What are the most common? Here they are:1. Fear. Fear is one of the worst enemies of success. When fear wraps its tentacles
around you and keeps you in bondage, you will never be able to reach for your dreams. We must confront our fears, see them for what they are, toss them to the side, and pursue our dreams with relentless passion. Conquering fear and stepping forward to reach new lands and new ideas is what makes success possible. What are you afraid of today? What fear must you conquer to be able to achieve your dream? When you realize what it is, take an action that is diametrically opposed to that which you fear. This will confront and conquer the fear by giving you the first step in the right direction.2. Lethargy. Quite frankly, what keeps most people from success is that they simply don't have the energy, or make the energy, to do what it takes to move to the next level. They get to a point that is comfortable and then they settle in for a nice, life-long nap! Don't get lethargic; get going! Force yourself to wake up from the slumber and move!3. Lack of perseverance. Often times the race is lost because the race is not finished. Success is often just around the sharpest corner or the steepest hill. Persevere. Keep going. One more hill. One more corner! In real estate they say the three most important things are "location, location, location." In success the three most important things are "perseverance, perseverance, perseverance."4. Pessimism. The saying is that you can achieve what you believe. Ask yourself what kinds of beliefs you hold. Are you an optimist or a pessimist? If you don't believe that you can achieve than you won't. Your pessimism will prove yourself right every time. You will find that you subconsciously undermine yourself. Develop your optimism. Look for ways to believe that you can achieve success.5. Not taking responsibility. I am the chaplain for the local police department. The other day I went with an officer as he took two prisoners to court. Time after time the prisoners made excuses as to why they hadn't yet done what the judge had ordered (she didn't buy it, by the way). After dropping the prisoners off, I said to the officer that unsuccessful people and prisoners have the same bad habit - they won't accept responsibility for their lives. You are responsible. When you accept that, you are on the road to success.6. Picking the wrong people to hang out with. We can easily become products of our environment. This is why it is essential to hang around people who will spur you on not hold you back! What about the people you have surrounded yourself with? Are they quality people who will encourage you and strengthen you in your quest for success? If not, move on!7. No vision. Those who succeed always see their success months and years before they live it. They have the ability to look ahead, see the future, imagine the good that can and will come from their lives, families and work. To not have vision is a tremendous roadblock. Sit down and work on seeing the future - and make it good!About The Author:Chris Widener is a popular speaker and writer as well as the President of

IF and WHEN
IF and WHEN were friends. Every week they met and had lunch. Their conversation usually centered on all the things they were going to achieve. They both had many dreams and they loved to talk about them. This particular Saturday when they met, WHEN sensed that IF was not in a great mood. As usual they sat at the table reserved for them and ordered their lunch. Once they placed their order, WHEN questioned IF. "IF what is wrong with you? You don't seem your usual cheery self?"IF looked at WHEN and replied, "I'm not sure, I just don't feel like I am making any progress. This last week I saw a course I wanted to take if only I had the time to take it."WHEN knew exactly how IF felt. "Yeah," replied WHEN, "I too saw a course and I am going to register when I get enough money together." WHEN then said, "well what about that new job you were going to apply for. You were so excited about it last week, did you apply?"IF responded, "If my computer didn't break down last week, I would have applied. But, my computer is not working, so I could not type my resume.""Don't worry about it IF, when you are ready another job will come through. I have been thinking about looking for another job also, but I will wait and when the weather gets nicer I will look then." WHEN then went on to tell IF about his week, hoping that it would cheer him up a bit.The man at the next table couldn't help overhear WHEN and IF. They both were talking about when this and if that, finally he couldn't take it anymore. "Excuse me gentlemen," the man said. IF and WHEN both looked at the man and wondered what he wanted. The man continued, "I'm sorry, but I couldn't help hearing your conversation. I think I know how you could solve your problems."IF smiled and thought, how could a complete stranger know how to solve all of their problems. If only he knew. When he realized the challenges they faced there was no way he could solve their problems! Curious, IF asked the gentleman, "How do you think you can solve our problems?"The gentleman smiled and said, "You only need listen to yourselves. It reminds me of an old proverb:'If and When were planted, and Nothing grew'."IF and WHEN looked puzzled. The gentleman smiled and said, "Start counting how many times you use the words 'if' and 'when'. Rather than thinking 'if and when', start doing, take action, stop talking about 'if and when'."IF and WHEN both looked surprised, and suddenly realized that what the gentleman had said was so true. Both of them were guilty of thinking, acting and living their life for the "ifs and whens". The gentleman left and IF and WHEN's conversation changed. They made a pact that when they met for lunch next week, there would be no "ifs and whens"; they would only talk about what they accomplished!ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Moving Beyond Self-Sabotage
Self-sabotage is one key factor that keeps our business from moving forward. We can sabotage ourselves in a variety of ways. There are many ways we can prevent ourselves from enjoying the success we desire. To ensure that our businesses grow and prosper, it is vital that we learn how to push through unproductive attitudes. Here are some tips to help you move beyond self-sabotage.1. Get into action. One of the best ways to overcome self-sabotage is to get into action and do something. In the case of your marketing, put yourself out there. Show the world who you are through your website, business cards, brochures, or through giving a speech. Do something now. Do anything -- now. It's the best deterrent to pushing through self-sabotage.2. Network. Get out and meet others. By mingling with others, finding out about their needs while sharing about yourself and your business, you'll feel more alive and energized. You'll not only have the chance to meet new people, but you might also create some opportunities that might propel your business to a new level.3. Be intentional. A great way to get you going is to do everything with intention. Living with intention is all about being conscious about how and why you are doing something. Make a plan to meet one new person for lunch each week. Consciously cultivate referrals by setting aside two hours per month to call up friends, family and business acquaintances to share what's new with your business. Don't just make lists of things to do. Every marketing effort should be intentional – well planned and carried out.4. Create a support system. Find others who will support you in the things that you are doing with your business. You might consider asking friends, colleagues, or even family members to give their approval on some of the projects that you are working on. While you might not think that something is perfect enough, the people on your support team can provide you with much a much less biased opinion. A support team can help you move to another step if you get stuck. Consult with others – sometimes that is all you need to prevent yourself from going down an unproductive path.5. Craft a vision for your business. Having a clear vision of your business purpose and mission can be critical to your business success. A vision, designed exclusively by you, provides a roadmap to help you move from where you are today to where you want to be tomorrow. When you don't have a clear vision about why you are in business and what purpose you are serving, it's easy to go in the wrong direction. Craft a written vision of your business. It will help you stay focused and on track. Don't become disappointed and dispassionate because you haven't invested the time to map out your roadmap to success. Do it now.6. Develop goals and objectives. Sometimes it's hard to get things done when we haven't formalized our objectives and goals. When we don't have a plan to work from, it's easy to stray down unproductive avenues, or even worse, we may end up abandoning or not starting projects in the first place. As a business owner it's vital that everything you intend to do be committed to writing. Not only will it make it easier to plan individual action steps to accomplish your goals, it will also give you a roadmap to stay on course when are getting distracted or losing motivation. Goals and objectives are a key ingredient to prevent self-sabotaging behavior.7. Marketing plans are important. Just as important as crafting a vision and supporting goals for your business, it's vital that you commit a marketing plan to paper. It doesn't need to be elaborate (one page will do) but it does need to outline certain information. A marketing plan, like a business plan, will help keep you on course. When the days get long and your motivation is running low, a written marketing plan can keep you focused on the most important tasks that you need to do. When you're too tired to think about what to do next, instead of engaging in unproductive activities, you can consult your written plan for direction.8. Just decide. Stop unproductive, self-sabotaging behavior in its tracks, by deciding that now is the time for you to be successful in your business. Adopt an "I can make it happen" attitude. It's amazing how things begin to shift when we change our perspective.9. Think long term. Create an action strategy for yourself that you can do for a period of 3 -, 6-, 12-months or more. Starting and running a viable business demands a long-term commitment and attitude. Design your daily business routines as well as different projects or other marketing ideas from the standpoint that you are "in this" for the long haul. A long-term action strategy is key to preventing you from hampering your progress.10. Celebrate you. Recognize that you are unique. There is no one else like you – there never has been and there never will be. Think about the gifts you were born with. What talents do you have that you can share with customers or clients? What special expertise or unique way of doing things sets you apart from everyone else who might have a similar business? Celebrate your uniqueness.11. Personal value. One excellent way to prevent self-sabotage is to really honor who you are. Think about the value that you add to other peoples' lives, not only personally, but through the products and services of your business. When you start thinking of yourself as valuable to others and to yourself, you won't even think about trying to put walls between you and your progress. You know that you have a responsibility to step up and show others who you really are.12. Change your attitude. We all know that thoughts influence how we feel. So if you don't like the way things are going in your business, change your attitude. It's been said that when all you have is a hammer, then everything begins to look like a nail. Shift your thinking and you'll change everything around you – from how you feel about your latest marketing efforts, to how you come across on the phone the next time you're speaking to a client.13. Reframe failure. Redefine how you look at failure. Failure is a natural part of life and it will inevitably impact your business. Failure is not the end of anything, nor does it mean that you are incompetent. Failure is a teacher that can help you to innovate in your business. It provides you with valuable information that you're doing something or going in a direction that isn't providing the results that you want. The sooner you understand this, the sooner you can re-orient yourself in another direction that can lead to success.14. Get more knowledge. Sometimes we sabotage our business efforts because we just don't know what we need to know. Lack of knowledge is a common excuse for creating obstructions along our road to success. If you need more knowledge, take classes, read books, or talk to others who have faced similar issues. You can also consider hiring a consultant, coach or specialist who can educate you in the areas you are lacking, or help you solve the issues directly.15. Welcome success. Business owners fear failure, but they also fear success. The fear of success underlies many sabotaging behaviors because of the accompanying feelings of not feeling good enough to deserve it. Adopt an attitude that you deserve the fruits of your labor, just as much as anyone else does. Changing your thoughts around success and knowing that it is your right to have might be the only thing standing in the way of great opportunities. Take a chance and welcome success with open arms.© Copyright 2004 by Alicia SmithAlicia Smith, a Coach and Trainer whose specialty is helping people Make Money Now. Gracefully Accepting Feedback a Key Employment Skill
With the long-term trend of protecting employees' individual self esteem added to an overriding concern over expensive employee lawsuits, accountability is more a buzzword than a way of life at most companies. This is a state of mind that has existed since the 1960s, so the average employee has never received real quality negative feedback -- the kind of feedback that might help startle him or her out of career-dashing behavior and toward a more lucrative and successful work life.Smart employers realize that people are their only sustainable competitive advantage. Companies hiring this year will be looking for people who are highly capable in their fields of expertise and who energize the other people with whom they work. This will hold true for traditional employees as well as independent contractors who will continue to make up a larger and larger part of the workforce.Don't wait for this new world of employment, prepare yourself now to get the feedback from others that will help you develop into the powerful person you can be. First, begin to change the way you feel about receiving feedback. Listen to the messages you get from those close to you: your spouse, children, close friends, other family members. Write them down and consider them as food for thought. Begin to analyze common pieces of feedback objectively and develop ideas about what you might do if you wanted to change their perceptions.A key factor to remember about all feedback: it is one opinion coming from another individual's unique perspective. It is up to you to consider it thoughtfully, compare it to other feedback you have received and do something positive with it. It is impossible for us to see ourselves as others see us, but very important that we don't allow these blind spots to jeopardize wonderful opportunities. Here's a system for taking in feedback for maximum benefit:When receiving any feedback, listen without comment, looking directly at the person. When they have finished, don't make any statements, but do ask questions if you want clarification. Don't accept, don't deny and don't rationalize. Because we are rarely taught to give feedback well, you will often get feedback when the giver is angry about something in the moment. Quality feedback may be emotional when it touches a heartfelt issue, but it is not abusive. If a co-worker's critique gets to this point you should ask to stop the discussion and have it at another time when cooler heads prevail.Recognize the courage it took to give you the feedback and consider it a sincere gift intended to help you grow. Thank the giver for feedback - make it short, but something you can say sincerely, such as "You've really given me something to think about, thanks." It is hard to feel real appreciation when you hear negative messages about your behavior, so it is important to have simple words of gratitude prepared ahead of time.Immediately write down all you can remember of the feedback, recording as many words used by the giver as possible. Allow yourself at least 2 days to process the information, taking no action to change your perceived behavior. Watch what you do and how other react to it. After a few days, go back and look at your original notes. Take out the emotion-packed words and look for the basic message.Know that feedback can be tough to receive, even if we solicit it and are grateful for it. Although it is simply another's perception, it can shake up your feelings about yourself. Plan to do something nice for yourself when you know you are facing tough feedback. Try to do something that bolsters self-esteem - dinner with friends, or engage in an activity that you are particularly good at.Discuss the feedback with friends or others whose opinions you respect, but ask them not to react to the message. Tell them you are only looking for sympathy for the difficulty of going through a rigorous self-development process, but that you don't want them to agree or disagree with the feedback. It would be normal to want to invalidate negative feedback, and to get others to help you, but you will lose what may be a critical grain of truth if you do.Use feedback in a positive way as soon as practical, not with the giver, but with others. Over time you may even want to tell others to lightly remind you if you slip back to old ways. "Jack, I don't want to bug you, but you asked me to remind you if you started to get behind on those reports."You are ready to receive feedback when you:Want to know yourself as others see you and you are clear that this is their perception, not necessarily what is true about you inside.Trust your co-workers to care enough about your development to risk giving their opinion.Have a place outside work you can talk it through.Have opportunities for additional feedback so you get validation of the changes you have made.Things you can do now to get more feedback at work:Find out if your employer has a 360 degree review program or is willing to allow you to work with your human resources department to develop a feedback program tailored to you.Look back at old performance reviews and see if there are common comments you can use.Consider hiring a personal development coach to give you alternative methods of getting feedback, such as personality testing.Decide to use the feedback to get a promotion or change career direction so that you have a reason to get involved in the process. As you get to know yourself better, feedback will become less painful. You learn how to put it into a larger perspective and how to allow it to help you achieve your dreams.About The AuthorJan B. The Circular Blame Game
Mike, his feet dangling above the city, opened his lunch box and groaned.Todd, his friend, a fellow construction worker on the high-rise, pretended that he hadn't heard the groan.Rick, more aggressive, asked, "Is it peanut butter and jelly again, Mike?""Yeah," said Mike, his voice heavy with frustration."Listen," said Todd, "You've been complaining about your sandwiches for weeks now.""Right," chipped in Rick. "Why don't you just do something about it?""Sure," said Mike, sarcastically, and tossed away his sandwiches. He watched them make a lazy arc above the city and disappear from view."Now you're going to go hungry for the rest of the day,"said Rick. "It wasn't a smart move.""Listen," said Todd, "I'm sick of hearing you bellyache every day. Why don't you just tell your old lady that you don't like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.""What old lady?" asked Mike, surprised.Todd and Rick glanced at each other. It was their turn to be surprised. "Come again?" they said in unison."I don't have an old lady. I'm single.""Who makes your sandwiches?" asked Todd."I do," said Mike.In this amusing story, we see something that almost everyone does. They blame circumstances and other people--for what they do to themselves. Because of the element of time between cause and effect, they forget that they did this to themselves.People complain about their jobs; yet, they are the ones who agreed to be hired on.They complain about their spouse or their friends. Yet they chose to be with these people. They complain about their bank account, luck, or any other misery that they're experiencing. Yet they brought all those circumstances into creation. So, unless a person decides to accept responsibility for where they're at and what's happening to them, things will continue to escalate out of control.Change happens when we decide to make a different kind of sandwich.Resource BoxSaleem Rana got his masters in psychotherapy from California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, Ca., 15 years ago and now resides in Denver, Colorado. 15 Success Secrets Of The Strongest Men In The World
The 2004 final of the World's Strongest Man METRx Championship took place in Nassau in the Bahamas. Three of the six finalists impressed me especially as great role models.Svend Karlsen of Norway (aged 37 and a former world champion) was injured in the heats before the final. However he kept going for a long time in the final by working around the events he could no longer do. He came last but still managed to put up a great performance in some of the events. After he had just carried two huge fridges, weighing 904 pounds in all, a fair old distance, the presenter asked "Was that mind over matter?"'Yes; very much so. Every time I stepped down on my left leg my head said: "It's not going to work." My heart said: "Keep on going." Competing when you are only half fit is mentally very tough. I think what I am doing is very brave.'He kept competing in those events which did not directly stress his left thigh. In the end his injury caused him to stop competing when it was obvious that he could no longer get a top place. However, he was immediately thinking of next year's competition in an optimistic and positive way. "I just need to heal up and start training again."Svend teaches us three great lessons1. Do what you can do. If injury or some other obstacle prevents you doing everything, just do something2. When the going gets painful, keep on going unless you will cause serious injury.3. When failure comes in one year, start preparing for the next.Magnus Samuelsson of Sweden (aged 35, over 6 feet and 5 inches tall and also a former champion), was in decline from his previous invincible self, but he ended up third. He knew he was weak in a few events. Height is not always a help in strength events. However, he remarked "The key for me now is to score as high as possible in the events I can score high in."Instead of being depressed by his poor showing in his least favourite events, he would concentrate on his strong events and make the most of what he could do. He had the sense to realize that every one has different skills and there is no point worrying about what you can't do well. Focus on what you can do well. After one of his favourite events he remarked "I needed something to go right just to get my confidence back and to get proof that I am still strong." Once he had proof, his overall importance improved. He began to put in some great performances. He had three bad events but kept going for his 'honour'. He wanted people to realize that he was still one of the strongest men in the world. He hoped to make the podiumHe did not make the podium in Nassau but did eventually make the podium by coming third when the third place competitor was disqualified for failing a drugs test. The following lessons can be learned from Magnus1. Don't worry about your weaknesses; make the most of your strengths2. Believe that you are strong and act accordingly3. Have the pride to come third even if you realize you will not come first.Vasyl Virastyuk of the Ukraine (aged 30) made a perfect start by winning the first event. He commented "Now you will see." He went on to win the second event and came second in the third. Those who start well often win the whole championship and this happened to Vasyl. Success breeds success as your confidence and momentum grow.Another secret to his success was the support and encouragement of his family. Every day they came to the gym. Vasyl commented: "It keeps me going when the training gets tough"A third secret was doing more in training than he thought he could. One of his favourite photos is of his son shouting "More, dad, more".A fourth secret lay in this comment from Vasyl:"I'm only competing with myself. If I do well, then I'll win it all."A fifth secret lay in his attitude. He always gives 100%. After the truck pull, he said: "That last event nearly killed me"A sixth secret is that he aims high. "What were your sporting ambitions when you were growing up?" asked John Inverdale the presenter."My dream is the same as all athletes. In my chosen sport I want to be the best. "A seventh secret is focus. Before the competition he was given a flat by the president of his federation. It was a big surprise and during the flight to Nassau from Kiev it was all he could think about. However, once he reached Nassau he stopped thinking about the flat and focused his mind on the competition. An eighth secret is that he is a 'gentle giant'. Those who can get on with others by being gentle despite their strength avoid the poison of poor relationships which will drain any one of energy and power. An ninth secret is that Vasyl knows how to celebrate. To his immense delight Vasyl went on to become world champion. When he realized he had won. He fell on his knees and hammered the floor with the palm of his hand. He then walked about yelling and screaming his delight. Finally he patted all 5 atlas stones that he had lifted in the final event. He had won by 1 point and was ecstatic.A key part of success is being able to imagine yourself celebrating after you have reached your goal. This is a powerful subconscious motivator. If you know how to celebrate well, your mental pictures of your celebration will be much more powerful and convincing to your subconscious mind.Your subconscious will then make a success arrive which will match your celebration. Many lessons can be learned from Vasyl, the strongest man in the world in 2004.1. Get off to a good start and build on early success2. Welcome the support of your family3. Do more than you think you can4. Compete with yourself. Do better than you did before5. Always give 100%6. Aim to be the best7. Focus on your main priority8. Be gentle with people9. Celebrate with enthusiasm before and after a challenge.Resource boxJohn Watson is an award winning teacher and martial arts instructor. Belief And Action Succeed
For centuries Protestant Christians have argued that you can reach heaven through faith (belief) alone while Roman Catholics have argued that both faith and works are necessary for salvation. However, both groups agree that faith and works are essential in the life of the true Christian. This truth applies not only to religion but to all of life. Whether you want to be a true believer or just to succeed in achieving your dreams, you need both faith and works or, in more modern language, belief and action.Believing that you are a writer is not enough. You have to do some works i.e. take action. You have to actually write something and it helps if you write every day.I am writing this article at 5 a.m. on a Monday morning. I will finish it today and then write another one. I have been doing this since December 1st 2004 and have now written well over a hundred articles. Daily action or work (whatever you like to call it) has achieved this. I also believed that I could write an article a day.A necessary part of any action is to keep going until you have finished whatever you are doing. What isn't finished is as useful as a two legged chair. Robert Louis Stevenson failed to finish 9 novels before he completed "Treasure Island". The action has to be persistent as well as daily.Big dreams about being a top guitarist won't cut it. Hourly, daily practice is essential. This practice has to be focused. Trying to be a classical guitarist and a rock guitarist does not usually work unless you are just playing for your own pleasure.I learned this lesson the hard way by trying to learn flamenco guitar, blues guitar, bottle neck guitar and rock guitar not to mention banjo, blues harp, drums and bagpipes all at the same time. Not surprisingly I never achieved a high standard at any of them though I was paid to play some of them!Who loses weight? Is it the person who longs to lose weight or the one who walks a few miles every day and eats at least one apple or orange a day?Again, specific daily actions rule. This cannot be stressed enough.Who achieves their black belt? Is it the one who watches all the Bruce Lee movies and sees himself in the hero's role or the one who turns up at the training hall in cold and wet weather and trains hard on a daily basis?Chris Widener, whose article inspired this one, gives some cogent examples of the contrasts between the dreamer and the doer:"Who retires early? The one who dreams of a house on the beach, or the one who invests $300 a month?""Who has the best marital relationship? The one who knows how much spending time with their spouse can improve their relationship, or the one who sits down and talks with their spouse every night?"Of course, belief is also very important. Unless you believe you can achieve your goals, you are not likely to take the necessary daily actions to achieve them. However the quickest way to increase your belief is to take action and see the progress you have made.If you do not believe you can rid your desk of the mountain of paper work start by filing at least one piece of paper a day. Before you know it your desk will be clear. As you may guess, I am staring at a cluttered desk right now!Believe and take daily action and you may surprise yourself with your own achievements.About the authorJohn Watson is an award winning teacher and martial arts instructor. The Courage To Act
The world is full of people with great intentions. They dream about all the wonderful things they would like to have and do in their lives, as soon as they get around to it. They get ready, they get everything in order, and they even have plenty of opportunities. They set specific goals with detailed plans on how to accomplish them. They read books, listen to audio programs, and attend seminars in their field. But, in most cases, little, if anything ever happens. Their plans never get off the mark. Weeks, months, and years pass by and very little happens for most of these people. They end up like the great majority of people, living lives of quiet desperation. What separates successful people from those who are not? When you examine all the characteristics, qualities, and behaviors of successful men and women throughout history, they all found the key to success. It is simply this: People who are successful think, plan, and then they take action. People who are not successful, think, plan, but never take action. And in most cases, that's all the difference there is.The world belongs to those who reach out and grab it with both hands. It belongs to those who do something rather than just wishing, hoping, and praying. It belongs to those people who take action today, rather than those who intend to do something someday, when everything is just right.Successful people are not necessarily those who make the right decisions all the time. No one can do that, no matter how smart he or she is. But once successful people have made a decision, they begin moving toward their objectives step-by-step. They begin to get feedback or signals to tell them where they're off course and when course corrections are necessary. As they take action and move toward their goals, they continually get new information that enables them to adjust their plans in large and small ways. There are no guarantees in life. Everything you do, even crossing the street, is filled with uncertainty. You can never be completely sure that any action or behavior is going to bring about the desired result. There is always risk. And where there is risk, there is fear. Whatever you think about grows in your mind and heart. People who think continually about the risks involved in every action they take become preoccupied with fears, doubts, and anxieties that always hold them back from taking any action in the first place. When you begin to take action on all your goals and objectives, you will find that something remarkable will begin to happen. New doors of opportunity will open for you everywhere. But these doors of opportunity will never open for you without taking action. They will never open for you if you wait for some assurance before taking action. It takes a great deal of willpower and personal organization to set a goal and then make a plan to achieve it. But that's where the work begins, not where it ends. Now you have to do something. Now you have to pick up the telephone and set up an appointment to see the person who can help you achieve your goal. Now you have to risk your time, or your money, or your energy. You have to risk your emotions and lay it all on the line. You have to be willing to take a chance, knowing that it might not work. You might hit a wall of disappointment and fall flat on your face. And you might very well find your selfback to square one, having made no progress at all.But this is what separates the successful from the unsuccessful people. Successful people know that you only have to succeed once. You can fail over and over, but as long as you succeed big just once, all the previous failures will be irrelevant. All those people who have been telling you to play it safe, and that what you're doing won't work, will now tell you how lucky you are that everything worked out.If you want to achieve success faster, then you have to try or do more things. Take more action and put the odds in your favor. According to the Law of Probability, the more things you try, the more likely it is that you will try the one thing that will make the difference in your life.General Douglas MacArthur once said, "There is no security in life, only opportunity." What this quote means is that if you look for opportunity, you'll find all the security you need. However, if you look for only security, you'll end up with neither opportunity nor security. The truth in this is all around us today. Thousands of men and women who sought nothing but security are finding themselves unemployed for long periods of time because of corporate downsizing and restructuring.Once you have a goal and a plan to achieve it, you must immediately take action. And once you start moving toward your goal, don't stop. You must do something every day that will move you closer to achieving your goal. Never let the size of your goal or the length of time it will take you to achieve it stop you from continuously taking action. During the planning process, break down your goal into small tasks and activities that you can do every day. The important thing is for you to always be making progress, every day, every week, and every month to the achievement of your goal. The most important single quality for success is self-discipline. This is the ability to make yourself do what you need to do to achieve your goal, whether you feel like it or not. You have to force yourself in to motion and stay there. Once you make a plan and set a schedule, you have to stick to it.It's easy for you to do something when you feel like it. If you want to, or if it makes you happy, or you have lots of time. However the true test of your character is when you do something you know that you must do, even if you don't feel like doing it.You can always tell how badly you really want something, and how capable you are of actually achieving your goals, when you begin taking action even when you feel tired, discouraged, or when you feel like your not making any progress. But very often, this is the exact time when you will break through to great achievement. The secret of success has never changed: Set a clear goal, write down a plan for it's achievement, and then take action on it. And once you get started, never give up. When you do this, your success is guaranteed.Copyright© 2005 by Joe Love and JLM & Associates, Inc. Measure Effort To Achieve Success!
Let's say you're moving forward in your efforts to achieve your goals. Along the way you will certainly experience many victories. Yet there will also be challenges and failures. To keep yourself going, you are going to need lots of support from within. This support is going to come in the form of self-monitoring, self-talk, and self-reward. I can not overstate the importance of constantly telling yourself what a good job you are doing. It's not just the little things that you do each day that will get you to your goal. It's learning to be excited by your choices and recognize your many triumphs — however small they may seem.It is wonderful to have the support of those you love. External accolades can be very nice. But if you do not have your own support, you'll quickly discover yourself drowning in misery and self-pity when things go wrong. There is nothing as substantial as love that comes from within. Freedom is learning to live from inner passion, following your own destiny. Allowing your life force to rise through you as you take each step of your journey, even when you occasionally fall flat on your butt. The accomplishment is to feel successful with each step you take, no matter what the outcome is. It is enough that you have taken the step. You are enough. We're all on the same mission — to discover inner peace, joy and harmony. Yet the paths we take to get there are as unique as snowflakes. Our particular course and destiny is shared by no one. There is no one path to reach prosperity. We each seek to evolve and grow past our current limitations. That's what we do as humans. We grow, and we discover something new ahead that we have yet to understand. As we look behind, we must appreciate what we have already learned. Furthermore, one day we comprehend that our path is not a dead end. There is no place we will reach where there are no problems, no challenges of face, no obstacles to overcome. The journey does not lead to an endpoint of perfection.THE MOUNTAINAn old proverb that often brings a smile to me is, "Best not to begin. Once begun, best to finish." Look ahead and see your path leading up a steep rugged mountain. The mountain's magic, magnificence, and lore captivates you. Your heart beats with excitement while your body trembles with fear. This is your destiny and the path to freedom. Accept that no one other than you is insisting you must climb. And with your adventure, you will most certainly encounter every fear that currently keeps you small. It will push you to your limit. On the climb is where you discover who you are and what you are made of.There are days as you advance that will seem as calm and delightful as a spring day. The sun will shine, bathing you with gentleness and warmth. The views are spectacular. Other days are filled with altitude and icy peaks. Blinding snow obscures your vision and howling wind cuts through your body. Your body will strain with the effort of each step. There will be doubt, and even misery. You will come face to face with your depression, helplessness, or hopelessness. Your thoughts will drift, wishing to give anything to be back in the place you started from. There are moments when you collapse with defeat. But for most of us, we find the inner strength to take another step. With bloody fingers, scraped forearms, and a bruised body, the climb continues. Reaching the next peak, you think this is it. Maybe when I reach there, I will finally be able to rest. I will know happiness and peace. Once I reach that peak, I'll be okay. You look down and see the mountain below you. And still you climb. There are days when you have traveled far and you feel you might finally be nearing the top, only to discover your path is blocked and you must retrace your steps and go another direction. And then it happens! One day, you look around as the fog clears and see that you have reached the top. This mountain was conquered, and here you are. You look out. . . and see that this mountain was nothing compared to the one which now looms above you, off a bit in the distance. If you are wise, you realize that the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time and the experience you are having. The next mountain calls, and you know you will climb it. So relax. Your life is about the climb and how you do it. Your life is about the times you reach deep inside to see what you are really made of. Your life is about how much heart, love and spirit you are willing to expose as you undertake the journey.MOTIVATIONOur road is filled with the seemingly infinite experiences and challenges that we must overcome. Although the obstacles may seem larger than the successes, this is an illusion. Learn to make the effort to notice the gradual changes that are occurring. Failing to recognize progress made can be devastating. If we haven't fed ourselves with heaping compliments and rewards for having overcome the last challenge, then we're stopped dead in our tracks with nothing to pick us up when we collapse at the next obstacle.Keeping written records of your positive behaviors, efforts and successes along the way is a powerful tool. Spend a little time devising a simple plan to document your daily achievements. Find a way to note the positive experiences, the things you enjoyed. There is an old childhood song that says, "Count your blessings, name them one by one." What great advice! What we focus on is what we receive more of.Measuring your weight may or may not be useful. You'll have to be the judge on that one. Either way, it can not be your only yardstick of accomplishment. Weight sometimes fluctuates, may be affected by fluid retention, it may plateau, and it almost always finds it's own pattern. Just like the journey isn't solely about reaching the top of your mountain, neither is the journey about solely reaching your weight loss goal. Measure effort, determination, small steps, and positive actions regularly and celebrate your successes! Here are a few things to think about as you measure your success:1. Do you enjoy what you do?2. What are you learning about yourself?3. Are you getting personal satisfaction from your efforts?4. Are you being true to yourself?5. Are you growing and accepting self-responsibility?6. Are you more self-confident?7. Do you feel more in control of yourself and your life?8. Are you becoming more self-loving?9. Are you listening to and trusting your body more often?10. Do you smile and laugh more each day?~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Helping people let go of self-destructive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors has been the life work of Dr. Annette Colby. Success = Prosperity
Material or physical success is often measured by the level of prosperity achieved. We can define prosperity as having or owning all that we idealize and desire. With this definition, we can see that even a monk who has taken on vows of poverty, silence and chastity can be prosperous, if he has those three things in abundance. How, then, can we become prosperous in all aspects of self, including but not limited to the materialistic? How can we arrive at a definition of success that encompasses all types of success, including the non-material?Success can be defined as being when the manifest result matches the originating ideal. There is a tendency to think of success strictly in materialistic or physical terms, but since success begins with the idealization of some idea or concept created originally in purely imaginary terms, it is more appropriate to think of success as a metaphysical concept. That is to say, success is dependent upon factors that are above and beyond (or meta to) the physical. Any defined or measurable success, even the purely materialistic, has elements that are more than physical. There are emotional, mental and spiritual (or etheric) elements that are not only necessary for success to be attained, but are also inherent in its definition.Success, then, can be seen to be much more than the accomplishment of a defined goal. It can be understood to be a continuous process of agreement intertwining the real with the ideal. The best way to achieve success comes from an understanding of this process and a conscious intent to apply harmony to its' individual elements. The behavior of all things existent within our universe, from subatomic particles to entire galaxies, from individual thoughts to an entire cultural mythos, are fundamentally understood to be vibratory in nature. Vibrations interact with other vibrations to create either a harmonic or a discordancy. When the result is in tune with the ideal, we have succeeded in creating what is desired. When the result is dissonant with the ideal, we have failed in creating what is desired.Success, therefore, can also be defined as the attainment of harmony. Failure can be defined as the attainment of discord. In order to achieve success by choice rather than by chance, it is wise to know all the elements of the process and then to consciously bring them into harmony, in order that the ideal can be made real. The realization of an ideal is accomplished through intentional harmony brought to bear upon all the elements of the process of materialization or manifestation. The power to effectuate or make manifest defined ideals comes from the application of the knowledge of the process of creation.Gaining that knowledge and then, applying it, elevates the individual from being a creature of circumstance (or victim of life) to being a creator of circumstance (or victor in life). The personal power to achieve success is dependent upon the harmony of ideal, intent, thought, emotion, action and result.
Victory is thereby accorded. If failure is defined as discord or conflict, then success can be said to be conflict resolution or the attainment of harmony. Success is harmony. The desire to achieve success is the desire to be in harmony. When we are in conflict with the conditions of our life, we have failed. When we are in accord with the conditions of our life, we have succeeded.Nothing would exist in the universe if the natural order of things did not have a tendency towards accordancy or harmony. Our planet would not orbit its' star without the balance or harmony between velocity and gravity. Our hearts would not beat if each and every heart cell did not do so in harmony with each other. Individual atoms and therefore all matter would not exist without the balance (poise or position) existent within the various subatomic components that make it up.The existence of the universe (all creation) is therefore understood to be reliant upon vibrational harmony. Our individual success (or ability to create that which we desire) is achieved through the application of universal principles of creation.Just as the ideal of the molecular structure named deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is made manifest or effectuated by a continuous process of bringing the various elements of its' construction into harmony, so is your ideal (simple or complex, material or ethereal) effectuated by the continuous process of bringing the various elements of its' construction into harmony. The result, whether it be success or failure, is the effect or that which is effectuated. This is a causal universe we exist in. Every effect must have a cause. To know and control the cause is to be capable of creating the effect. If the conditions of our life are understood to be that which is effectuated (the effect), then we, when we claim our individual power to choose our ideals, our thoughts, our emotions, our words and our actions, are understood to be the cause.Victims choose to be caught up in or controlled by circumstance and condition.Victors choose to be the cause of circumstance and condition. Success is victory. Victory is harmony. Harmony is peace.Success is accorded to those who choose to be causal. The causal always requires harmony in order to effectuate. Thus, the ideal ideal, so to speak, is, of necessity, harmony. Concordance.Returning to our original questions, it can now be understood the prosperity comes from peace. You are rich and successful when you are in harmony, in accord with the universal and its' natural laws of manifestation. You prosper as creator of circumstance when you are in tune with the infinite, which as we know, is the embodiment of peace and love and harmony and—prosperity. After all, the infinite can be said to idealize and possess the entire universe.© Leslie Fieger. Manifesting Wealth
Many people talk or write about the science of success or the art of creating wealth. You don't want just the science. You don't want just the art. What you want is the technology. The how to.Manifestation is not a mystery. It is a process. All processes can be analyzed, taken apart, step-by-step, and then, once understood, can be applied scientifically to produce the desired results. There is a technique for manifesting anything, including wealth.Scientists study the physical world in order to ascertain the metaphysical principles that apply to how things unfold in our universe. They theorize about how things that have happened did happen. A theory becomes accepted only when direct experiment proves that application produces a manifest reality. Once the process (the unfolding) is understood and proven through application, science becomes technology. Technology is applied science. Power is applied knowledge. Knowledge, by itself, produces nothing, not even wisdom, let alone practical results. It is all in the application.Where can you learn the right application? You can experiment to see if your personal theory will work or you can observe those whose experiments have produced the desired results and then utilize the same techniques, the same process. The power to create or manifest wealth comes from applying the knowledge of the process of creation. The knowledge of the critical elements in a process do not create the process. It is the proper and purposeful use or application of the elements that produce the results.I can tell you again that thought plus desire combined with belief plus intent create your results. You might completely understand and agree with that; but if you do not apply it, then it is useless knowledge, like books gathering dust on a library shelf. The process of manifestation is:it begins in the ideal (causal);it moves into the virtual;it becomes real;it becomes manifest (effectual). The elements of the idealization are: Thought, desire, belief, intent, commitment, insight. The elements of the virtualization are: Visualization, affirmation, gratitude, congruity, planning. The elements of the realization are: Your words and your deeds. So now you know. Now you must apply your knowledge.Idealize it: Think the right thoughts. Desire the result. Believe in the actuality. Intend for it to be. Commit to making it so. Understand what it will mean.Virtualize it: See it as real. Affirm it to be. Be thankful for its existence. Harmonize yourself with it. Attract it. Plan for it to be.Realize it: Speak the truth of it. Act to enact it.Enjoy having it.Want to be wealthy?Think about wealth and abundance, NOT about lack and limitation.Desire wealth; lust after it; don't just wish for it.Believe in it and your right to it. Stop believing in scarcity. There is none. (When you have nothing, you have an abundance of nothing. When you have mediocrity, you have an abundance of mediocrity)Clarify your intentions. What is your intent in thinking that thought, in doing that deed? Commit 100% to becoming wealthy.Understand (gain insight into) what wealth is and what it means to you.Visualize your wealth. See yourself as wealthy.Be rich. Affirm to yourself and others that you are wealthy and that you deserve to be.Be grateful for your abundance. Show your appreciation. Attract wealth by being worthy of it.Plan. Set specific goals and follow your game plan.Stay true to your ideals. Talk your truth and then walk the talk.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Take some hints from the universe: It is constantly creating new space. Why? To make room for more.Make some space in your life for more to show up. Get rid of what you don't need. If those thoughts don't serve you—dump them. If those beliefs serve no useful purpose—junk them. If that activity is not producing wealth—stop it. Why exactly do you watch TV? Are you going to get wealthy watching who wants to be a millionaire? No.You will get wealthy by applying the proven technology of wealth creation. Of course, only if you think so and only if you believe it.© Leslie Fieger. 10 Tips for Sensible Living
Here are a few suggestions that I try to put into practice in my own life...1) Live within your means - Sooner or later, nearly everybody has to learn to be content with what they've got. President Bush just signed a tough new set of laws which will restrict who can file for bankruptcy. You don't want to fall into that category. This means not only making more money than you spend, but also putting some of that hard-earned green away for emergencies. I suggest having enough liquid assets at your disposal to live for six months without any income. Start at the top...Do you have a $30,000/year job, and own a $300,000 house? Sell it and buy a smaller one. How about that car? Over $15,000? New flat screen plasma TV? Fishing Boat? Give yourself a break and ease your financial stress by cutting out anything that wrecks the budget. Do it now.2) Establish priorities - Make yourself a list of things that are important. For each item you list as a priority, identify how it ranks in terms of reward, enjoyment, sacrifice, and difficulty. This will help you see what things in your life can be cut out, and where you need to spend more time, money, and energy. Set a goal for each item listed. It's tough to get to where you want to be if you don't know how to get there.3) Don't overcommit - One of the toughest things for many of us is to learn how to say "no". We care too much about what other people think, and so we try to do everything. It's a terrible trap, and most of us fall into it at some time, and then have to pull ourselves out after some kind of meltdown. If I didn't say "no" several times a week, I would be much more tired, cranky and unfocused than I already am. Keep the things that are high-priority...cut the rest. Use your priority list (above) to help determine what's gotta go.4) Pay your bills early - Don't just pay them on time. You want to give yourself a little fudge room in case you're on vacation when that cable bill shows up or the phone bill is lost in the mail. Pay the bills right when they come in and your credit score will thank you.5) Organize - Take some time to clean out those drawers in the office. File, shred and throw away. Chances are, by looking through all the paperwork from the last six months, you'll remember, "Hey, I forgot to call my insurance agent" or some such thing. Note: you have to have time to do this, so see #3 above.6) Work close to home - How many hours do many of us spend in our car, when we would rather be at home, with friends, or at the movies? If you are commuting an hour to work and back, that's too much! Either find a job that pays a little less and cut your commute, or relocate closer to work. Time is not money, but at the end of our lives, most people wish they had spent more time doing what was important (not driving)...7) Buy a house - I can think of very few reasons not to own your own home right now. The current tax laws say that you can deduct up to $250,000 of gain on the sale of a home if it is your primary residence. It is hard to find a better investment anywhere.8) Be patient when purchasing - Whether it's a house, car, TV or computer...don't buy the first one you see. Chances are, you'll regret the decision years later. Instead, do your own research to compare prices and quality of whatever it is you're buying. I looked for two years before I bought my first house.9) Find a job with good benefits - Anyone who is in business for themselves will tell you that insurance is expensive. Try to find a job that not only pays your health and dental insurance, but also provides disability and life insurance, covers family members, provides profit-sharing and matching 401k plans. Making $50,000 at a job with no benefits isn't any better than making $35,000 with all the perks. Plus, the person at the lower wage has "more room to grow" (a favorite phrase of bosses everywhere).10) Invest for the future - Pay your debt off first, then build yourself a little nest egg for emergencies. Once you've done that, start putting away for your retirement. The earlier you start, the more aggressive you can afford to be. Stay active in managing your retirement plan. Don't just shove $50/month into some fund you know nothing about. Diversify your retirement plan so you can't be stung if the Stock Market goes belly up.About me: I am in my mid-thirties and have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, with a minor in Decision Science. The Gift Of Success
Often just one self-help principle can increase your power to achieve your goals and can help your life take off. This article is about one such principle - success breeds success.I once suggested that, if you don't feel like going shopping, just go and sit in your car with your car keys and some money! Once you are there, you will almost always take the next step and drive to the shops. If you find drinking 8 glasses of water a day difficult, drink just one glass a day. I drink one glass a night. I am then more likely to drink more water later in the day.The key in both the examples above is to achieve a small success like just sitting in your car or drinking one glass of water. Each success will usually lead on to another and so on.Judith Wright gave a similar piece of advice to a man who had failed to use his expensive work out equipment. He was planning to ride his mountain bike 3 times a week. She told him he would fail. Instead he should plan only to sit on his bike in the garage three times a week.He resisted this advice for a while as being less than macho but in the end followed it. As Judith wisely predicted he not only sat on the bike, he went for a little ride. Pretty soon he was working out regularly. One success breeds another. He had given himself the gift of success.I too have an exercise bike I have barely used. It is set up in front of a TV set so that I could be entertained or even educated as I worked out. In spite of this inviting arrangement I have seldom used it.Judith Wright's bicycle remedy would solve my problem. In fact I tried it today and it worked.I also have a stretching machine in my bedroom which I only rarely use. It is often covered with clothes and parcels etc. However, when I do actually make the effort to sit on it, I usually do some stretching.Lower your expectations until you achieve a very small success and then start raising your expectations. If you start with high expectations and fail, you are less likely to continue.Success on the other hand, as is well known, breeds success.
If you can't bear to sit on your exercise bike at least go and stand by it!The principle of success breeds success can be applied to almost anything. If you are delaying reading a book, just put it on the desk in front of you. Big deal! But if you go on and read a life changing book, it will be a big deal.If you don't feel like doing the tasks on your to do list, just look at the list for a minute or so or rewrite it. This may sow the seed of action in your subconscious mind and even if you don't take action immediately, you may do so later. If you are slimming, stay out of the kitchen for another five minutes. In the mean time you may well get interested in something other than food or may even get some work done. By the time you have finished you may actually be hungry rather than just bored.Just this one principle of success breeding success can change lives! Give yourself the gift of success and expect the miracle of a life transformed.About the authorJohn Watson is an award winning teacher and martial arts instructor. How to be Congruent and Experience Balance Every Day.
"If you can tell the world who you are and what you believe without breaking stride or hesitating, you are happy with yourself."
- Neale Donald WalscheI attended a large networking meeting last week with lots of varying types of businesses and people and one of the speakers was talking about and explaining how online networking had helped him go from redundancy to having his own lucrative business that he really enjoyed running in a relatively short period of time. While he wasn't the greatest public speaker that I have encountered, there was something about him that made me want to give him business and that made me like him: he was congruent. He had balance. What do I mean by Congruent? Or balance? I mean that this is a description of how you are when what you do, say, and deeply believe are all aligned. Congruence and balance is a sort of 'deep honesty' about who we are as individuals, and it is attractive and it is appealing. People are powerfully attracted to congruent individuals. People who have balance.Congruence is not only something that is about how others perceive you. It is also important in how you perceive yourself. If you want to make a powerful change in your life and you really want a particular thing but keep on doing something else, then incongruence will exist in your own perception of yourself too. This can cause loss of balance. So how do you go about becoming congruent? Or having more balance?Ok, firstly, figure out your values, then honour them; values are what is important to you. Examples of your values include helping others, having security, enjoying freedom, continuous learning, experiencing love, having a family, etc. You may know some of these right away, areas where you already have balance may start to pop up, while others may take some digging. One way you can find out what you value is to identify something you really want, then ask yourself this question;"What will that give me that I wouldn't otherwise have?"When you have subsequently answered that question to yourself, ask it again.Ask yourself; What do I want? An example response might be : To reduce my weight. Then you ask: What will that give me that I wouldn't otherwise have?" The answer might be: A body I can feel comfortable showing off. Then ask again: What will that give me that I wouldn't otherwise have? The answer may well be: Freedom. To get the most from this exercise, you need to take the question as far as you can until you get the simplest answer and the question can be asked no more. When you go as far as you can, you end up with a core value: what it is that's really important to you. In this example it was freedom. Knowing this can begin to install balance.Secondly here, pay attention to your body. That also needs balance.Your body and your neurology have been developed over thousands of years to provide you with very accurate and real feedback about congruence and balance. If you are at a dinner party and you are smiling and chatting nicely and being charming but all the time you are thinking "I cannot stand these people" that uncomfortable feeling in your body and thought in your mind is an incongruent signal – a lack of balance - a sign that you're 'out of tune'. When you have a deep sense of peace and joy, genuine balance, really truly enjoying the company of those people, then that is a sign that you are aligned and are subsequently going in the right direction. One way to achieve greater congruence is just eliminate all activities that lead to incongruence. Maintain balance. The speediest and most natural way to do this is to do and engage in things that you love to do and/or really enjoy doing. These things help to balance you. When you do what you love, enjoying your life and then letting go of all the other stuff, you get to spend more and more time experiencing a sense of joy, fulfillment and happiness. As well as being great fun, this is also highly attractive – people really like to be around someone who is doing what they love! That includes you being around yourself. You will love yourself a lot more when you are enjoying what you are doing when looking to achieve your goals for personal development. One of the things I love doing is running the various training courses that I do run regularly. Things like my self-hypnosis courses for example are one of the most powerful approaches that I have encountered for helping people to live congruently, with balance and creating the lives that bring them joy and happiness. When I'm running training courses or seminars; to experience other people making powerfully progressive changes to heighten their own experience of themselves for themselves, ensures that I experience that sense of deep congruence and balance that comes from being fully myself. This sense of being truly yourself is the most powerful 'life-compass' there is in my opinion. The 'attractive' power of congruence and balance works just as well for your own goals. We can all think of examples of goals that we want to achieve where 'The Values' may include words like 'people', 'integrity' 'Health' 'Happiness', but where the actions and behaviours we are taking don't support those values of the goals. On the other hand, you may have encountered people that their behaviours match their values. This person is congruent, (and has balance) and that congruence (and balance) sends an unconscious message to people and to yourself, your own mind, that says "You can trust this person to do what they say they will". So continue to check with yourself;- Are your own personal values clear to you?- Do my actions and attitudes fit with these values?Have a think about creating some congruence and balance in your life.Copyright 2005 Adam Eason. Hidden Gems in a Quote: From Henry David Thoreau "I have learned, that if one advances..."
"I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours"The great American poet, author, and philosopher, Henry David Thoreau was the writer of the passage above. It's a passage that has been quoted many times by different authors in the personal development field. The message contained in this quote is concentrated and if applied can take us to the highest heights of success and achievement. The words did not come out of a whim, they were carefully chosen. We'll look at this quote and examine the gems contained within which we would otherwise miss in reading it quickly."If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams…."In this passage we can see some important words that we should pay attention to. The first one is "advances". We have to constantly move forward and not stay still. This is speaking against procrastination. Thoreau did not say, "We should constantly think about our dreams." To be successful one has to do more today than they are doing yesterday. A step forward should always be taken. We should not take a break while performing the activity that will bring us success. But how should we advance? He says to advance confidently. You have to be confident that you can reach that goal. Sometimes the only thing that you have to hold on to is your belief that you can reach that goal. There are times when others will not support you and will put you down. This is the way of the world. We are well aware of this, but we should not let it affect us. We have to be strong and confident that we will reach the goal if we persevere."..and endeavors to live the life he has imagined…"Here we have another gem for success. He says that the person who "endeavors to life the life". To endeavor means to make an effort to do something. In other words, you have to act upon the life that you imagine yourself to have. You have to take action upon your dreams. That is the only way that you will be able to achieve it. Taking action is the most critical step that a lot of people fail to take. I have fallen into this trap so many times. We want to wait until everything is perfect and we use that as an excuse to not take action. We say that we want to plan it out. The word plan should be followed by action. A plan without an action is what we should call a wish. So it's not enough to just imagine it, you have to endeavor to live the life, which means you have to take action upon your dreams.".. will meet with success unexpected in common hours.."As the person "advances" with "confidence" and "endeavors" to live the life of his/her dreams, they are constantly changing internally. They have changed themselves from the inside and naturally once the internal condition of the person changes it is only a matter of time until this change shows itself in the external. This external change is what people call success and it will show up unexpectedly. It is amazing how short powerful sentences contain so much in them. Let us spend time with powerful quotes. They have the power to change your life. All of the ingredients for creating success in your life are already inside you. All the tools that you need to chisel yourself to bring out the success ingredients are already available. Continue to advance confidently in the direction of your dreams through taking action and you can't help but attract success to you because you have become the source of success!Sukhbir Singh is the Founder of LifeApps! Do You Know Your Success Barriers?
I can tell, with 95% accuracy, if you are going to succeed or fail in life and business based on your answer to the following question, "Do you mostly read for entertainment?"Reading for entertainment is a wonderful way to relax and get away from daily stress. However, in a society where your pay is based on your knowledge and skills, simply reading for entertainment is not enough.Reading fiction can provide you with some useful information. Unfortunately, it's usually not the information you need to increase your income. In order to obtain your goal to be successful, if that is your goal, you need to supplement your fiction with nonfiction material.Specifically, how-to-books, magazines, web sites, forums, audio and videotapes that direct your thoughts, actions, behaviors, attitude and outlook on becoming successful.Your whole being must be immersed in your goal to succeed!Success will not fall into your lap! You must create it. You must train your mind to see opportunities most people overlook every day. There is an opportunity staring you in the face right now; but you cannot see it until you expand your knowledge and are able to see things from a different perspective.Reading to gather information helps you to develop your vocabulary in a certain area and allows you to understand industry jargon. It helps you stay abreast of trends that may affect you directly or indirectly. It is not easy to stay up-to-date! Fortunately, you have quality information available to you on the Internet. If your goal is to start a business, then:
Get a book on starting the business you desire
Get on the Internet and do some information gathering
Start networking with people that are doing what you want to do and learn from them
Whatever you do start reading with a goal in mind.I want you to do a little exercise. Write down five goals you want to achieve within five years.Next, I want you to write down what steps you have to take to reach those goals. You don't have to be specific, general steps are fine. Now ask yourself, "Will reading for entertainment help me to achieve the goals I listed?"If reading for entertainment will help you keep on reading. If it does not then it is time to modify your reading material to match your goals.Repeating the same habits and actions does not create different results! When you change the action or habit you change the outcome!Shawn Nelson, MSA is a Motivational Speaker, Life Counselor and Author who creates guides, e-Courses and run several web sites that help people achieve their relationship, personal, life and professional goals. Doing the Abun-Dance: the Art of Prosperous Living
I have been hearing a lot about the "Law of Attraction" the last few years and I have found this model to be quite attractive... gosh, I guess it's working. Anyways, when it is narrowed down to it's basics it seems to mean that you will reap whatever type of energy you sow.If you put out negative energy, then you will get back negative energy. Likewise, if you put out hope and optimism, then that too will be returned to you. If you want to truly create and live the life of power, passion and purpose, then it is of the utmost importance that you sow your seeds accordingly. One very powerful action and attitude you can take is to practice "acts of random kindness", while also creating "play it forward" systems of living. Let me explain.Random acts of kindness are just that: They are random and they are kind. When you give just out of your desire to give and expect nothing in return, and you do it only to benefit others, then you are practicing random acts of kindness. Think about the energy you are sowing: Love, acceptance, care, support, and generosity. These are all very powerful seeds to be planting in the garden of your life. This does not mean that you do this with any expectation of return, but rather, you do just for the sake of doing it. I have never met anyone that, given their choice to do anything that they wanted to do, would not want to give for the purpose of helping humankind in some way.Play it forward, on the other hand, comes from the movie of the same title. It was a system created by a very wise young man in which he proposed as part of a homework assignment that if we all did something positive for three other people and asked them to do the same for three other people, it would take very little time before everyone will have been positively affected. It is easy to "pay back" someone when they have done you a favor, but with this system it is about doing them a favor and then asking them to do the same. Again, you will be planting the seeds of much abundance and prosperity by practicing these attitudes. You reap what you sow...by the way, what's in your garden??Ken Donaldson has been based in Tampa Bay offering counseling, coaching, and educational programs since 1987.
