Success Speaker Asks: Are You Moving Toward Something or Away From Something?

Author : Dr. Gary S. Goodman
I was in that twilight zone between sleep and wakefulness when the question popped into my mind:"Are you moving toward something or away from it?"My eyes drifted over to my exercise encampment where I could see my bike, my Soloflex machine, barbells, dumbbells and rowing machine.I wondered: Do I exercise because I'm concerned about my waistline getting out of control or because I foster a vision of a better, stronger, leaner body? You might wonder, what's the difference? If you're fleeing something you have a certain kind of motivation. It can be called avoidance or escape motivation, and it has its own set of dynamics.Success is determined by NOT having something gloomy happen. An unglamorous, but necessary form of avoidance motivation is present in fire prevention.A negative form of avoidance is extreme risk aversion, where you are constantly walking on eggshells, hoping calamity doesn't strike. The dieter, who develops major food phobias, thinking certain common edibles are hazardous, and who radically restricts his diet, is motivated by avoidance. There's only so much pleasure that he can derive from "succeeding." Moreover, research regarding the connections between nutrition and longevity are too equivocal to offer much guidance. If you're striving for something, it's an approach motivation, a growth impulse that is propelling you. Generally, this is what comes to mind when we're feeling we're making progress in our jobs and in our personal lives.Wanting to strengthen your knees so you can snow ski is positive. Doing it so you feel you're avoiding atrophy and physical degeneration, is less rewarding. The deer caught in the headlights is the individual who, simultaneously, is going after something but is being held back by what he is avoiding. Some folks can get stuck right in the middle, cancelling out their progress like the proverbial base runner that wants to steal second, but is afraid of being picked off at first, so he stays too close to the bag, seldom taking a large enough lead.An underachieving salesperson wants to earn a paycheck, but he also tries to avoid the sting of rejection. He ends up doing a poor job of both. You might say the person who is moving TOWARD a goal is AT CAUSE, where the one who AVOIDS something, is AT EFFECT.Grandma, who made those beautiful quilts, wasn't simply trying to keep her hands busy, as she modestly explained. She wanted to leave us with something useful as well as personal, unique, and precious. Is there a difference, when all is said and done, between one form of motivation and the other? You can buy a quilt in a store that will keep a chill away, but it won't quite warm you up, and cheer you up, like grandma's can!Best-selling author of 12 books and more than 800 articles, Dr. Gary S.
