At the beginning of this year I made a few spiritual goals. One of them was to become firmly established in the correct practice of Vipassana meditation. After taking a ten-day meditation course twice, I knew I wanted to maintain the suggested daily practice of an hour of meditation in the morning, and an hour in the evening. So I have.But it didn't take long before I realized that by myself, there was no way I could have maintained the daily meditation practice for the past several months if I did not have the support of a spiritual group to help me. Simply put, I lacked the will to do it consistently over a prolonged period of time.Have you ever gone on a group bike ride? If so, then you may know about "drafting". Drafting is when one person leads, and those who stay close behind, don't have to work quite as hard because of the wake the leader creates. Different people take turns leading, so everybody can benefit. Geese do this too, when they fly in their V formations. In fact, scientists have discovered that geese can fly up to 70% farther by flying in the V formation than if they fly alone.Having a spiritual group is like drafting. You still have to work, but a wake is created when you have a teacher who makes an environment for spiritual growth. When people come together and work toward a common spiritual goal, the momentum helps them make progress they would not otherwise make.If you wish to grow spiritually, I encourage you to find a group with a spiritual teacher.
